The Northrop YF-23 lost the Advanced Tactical Fighter competition to the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor in 1991.
The first Northrop YF-23 87-0800 made its first public appearance at the Edwards Air Force Base open house on October 19, 1996, five years after losing the competition. It flew with the civil registration N231YF and was nicknamed the Gray Ghost.
